Asphalt Overlay

Before
After

The challenge was how to best, and most cost effectively, replace the crumbling 37 year old parking lot at the Sparkles Roller Rink in Hiram, Ga. One answer would have been to use 1” of a well-known 2-layered repair system plus 1” of standard HMA topping placed in two lifts. The answer that both the owner and Jay Herzog with Blackjack Paving agree upon however, was something different. Their solution was to place a single 2” lift of typical HMA topping, but to add FORTA-FI® HMA fiber-reinforcement.

FORTA-FI® has been proven to add more than 50% to the life of all different types of asphalt, and has shown great success in eliminating or minimizing the block cracking and sunken areas that plagued this project. The labor time on this project was cut in half, offsetting the cost of FORTA-FI®, and enabled the contractor to schedule additional projects. The next morning, a tour bus unexpectedly used the freshly paved parking lot to make a U-turn. Afraid of damage, Jay immediately inspected the area and found no sign of rutting or even tire marks. It was clear to him that this FORTAfied® asphalt clearly acted better than he expected, and they are confident they made the best decision.

  1. When would you get an asphalt overlay instead of completely replacing the road? I have a road to my business that's starting to get pretty rough and I can't decide if I should get an overlay or just replace it. Any advice will help.

    1. Thank you for your question.
      Our technical department recommends:
Damage to the roadway base requires 'full depth' asphalt replacement, and if you have 'alligator' cracking on the surface it would indicate base issues that need attention.

Top-down surface cracking may be solved by milling off a few inches of old asphalt and replacing it with new material. You should have your road analyzed before deciding which way to go with this repair.
Please feel free to contact 1-800-245-0306 and ask for the Asphalt Technical Manager if you need any more information.
