"Thinlay" Asphalt

Penn DOT District 3-0 is testing pavement preservation treatments. A four mile stretch of SR 220 in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania was broken into three sections. The southbound lane received a microsurfacing treatment and the northbound lane was divided into two- two mile sections. Each section received a one inch thinlay using PG76-22 with one of the sections incorporating FORTA-FI® fibers. The intentions of the project is to see an improved strength and longer lasting pavement using FORTA-FI® within the asphalt pavement mix. Penn State University will be monitoring the conditions of the test sections for the next three years.

Jackson Hole Airport

The Jackson Hole Airport is located at the base of the spectacular Teton Mountains, and is located entirely within Grand Teton National Park.  FORTA-FI® was used in a 1 ½” (38MM) porous friction course on the runway 1/19 rehabilitation Project.  This airport had several unique attributes that demanded a reinforced asphalt mixture.

The airport location accumulates 300” of snow annually.  The snow plowing in the past has caused the previous pavement to ravel.  Accompanied with temperatures that can swing from-40°F to 41°F in the winter months, and annually from 40°F to 104°F in the summer months.

The Jackson Hole Airport has 35,000 flights annually with over 300,000 enplanements.  The runway elevation of 6,450 feet causes planes to land at higher speeds.  The runway length 6,300 feet is relatively short for higher speeds and larger aircraft.  The airport itself can accommodate both smaller and larger planes, such as 757’s and A320’s.

State Route Paving Project

Pennsylvania State Route 2020 was a full depth replacement of existing composite pavement which carries ADT of 18,799 with 5 to 27% truck traffic.  The truck traffic on this road consists of semi-truck traffic to and from landfill and warehouse facilities.  The base course used consisted of PG 64-22, 25mm, 6” depth, HMA, 30 million ESAL SUPERPAVE mix, with PG 76-22, 19mm, 3” depth HMA intermediate course, 30 million ESAL SUPERPAVE mix.
